Our Lady of Fatima Catholic School

Mrs. Barrios - Fifth Grade

Welcome to my class page.  Here is a summary of the grades and classes that I’m teaching this year.

Grade 5 Reading and Spelling – Each week the students learn to spell 25 new words that correlate with the story that they are reading.  A pretest is given on Monday to determine which words they need to study the most.  A test is given each Friday in both Reading and Spelling.

Grade 5 Handwriting – The students are practicing cursive writing.  They will do their weekly Spelling tests in cursive.

Grade 5 Science – The students will be learning about plants, animals, weather, rocks and minerals, space, laws of motion, light, sound, and systems of the human body.  A test and performance skill is given at the end of each chapter.  There are many experiments and hands-on activities throughout the chapter.

Grade 5 Social Studies – Students will be studying the history of the United States.    There will be a test, and the students will also be doing a project for each chapter.

Grades 4 and 5 Spanish – Students will learn about the culture of Spanish speaking countries as well as Spanish phases and sentences.  They will be using a Spanish book and workbook.

Grade 5 Math – The students will be learning how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions and decimals.  They will be using Math textbook and workbook.

Religion-Students will be learning more about each of the seven sacraments.  They will also learn about Jesus in our daily lives.

Grade 4 Social Studies-Students will be learning about Pennsylvania history as well as the other United States Regions.  They will be given a study guide for each chapter but a notebook is also required.

Fifth Grade students will need a notebook for the following subjects:  Reading, Science, Math, Religion, and Social Studies/Spanish.  Multi-subject notebooks are fine.  We’ll only be using a Spanish notebook occasionally, so it can be the back part of the Social Studies notebook.

Fifth Grade students also need:  5 jumbo book sox,  2 pocket folders, a pair of scissors, glue, crayons (or colored pencils), 1 highlighter, 1 crate for extra books, and 2 boxes of tissues.
They will be allowed to use pen in some subjects but black or blue ink only.  Erasable pens will also be permitted in place of pencils for activities requiring pencil.  The exceptions are in Math and Art where only pencils are permitted.  Fourth Grade students need a notebook which they may use for both Social Studies and Spanish.

Thank you,

Mrs. Barrios
